Apartment & Unit

The term “apartment” can be generically applied to any residential unit inside a building. The building can be a house, townhouse, large residential building, and even condominium high-rise where owners sublet their units.

An ‘apartment’ and ‘unit’ are often referring to the same thing (a rental of a multi-family dwelling), though a ‘unit’ can also refer to the rental or purchase of condominium.

An apartment, or flat , is a self-contained housing unit (a type of residential real estate) that occupies only part of a building, generally on a single story. There are many names for these overall buildings. The housing tenure of apartments also varies considerably, from large-scale public housing, to owner occupancy within what is legally a condominium (strata title or commonhold), to tenants renting from a private landlord.
